HOME Internet-and-Businesses-Online Banner-Advertising Become a

This is the fourth series in a mini series called ?Become a Banner Ad Expert Starting Today.? In the first few series I covered things like ?What is a Banner, Different Kinds of Banner Ads, and How to Advertise.? Welcome to Series IV, let?s get started! Sell Some of Your Own Space

One way for you to generate a good income is to start selling space on your website to individuals. While you may think that this is a complete walk in the park, heed my warning; it can be a little complicated. If you are looking for the easiest way to accomplish this I would look to join a banner ad network. When you join a banner ad network they will recruit people that want to advertise, they will keep track of your earnings and control the placement of the ads on your site. Since you are providing the site but someone else is doing most of the work, you end up losing tons of revenue. Since there are many, many more sites that want to offer space on their sites to advertisers than people actually wanting to advertise; which makes banner networks be very selective on what sites they want to work with. Many of your banner ad networks have set in place a minimum amount of traffic the site must obtain. You may be wondering how much traffic is required, it?s a lot. Are you ready? Many banner ad networks require the sites they work with to have at least 300,000 visitors a month to even be considered for a CPM program. A great thing though about some banner ad networks is that they do cater to a wide variety of websites. They can do this by offering different tiers based on monthly traffic. This is a great opportunity for even the small advertisers to also play because it allows them to choose a site and a budget that fits their needs. While banner ad networks do cater to tons of many different sites and advertisers, they do have rules about not showing mature content or any type of offensive material or if you start coming across like you are spamming. If you have a pretty mature site and your site obtains a great deal of traffic than 150,000 impressions per month you should have no problem joining a banner ad network CPM program. If you are just starting out with a new site or still haven?t reached the 150,000 impressions a month, you should look into a click through program. You may not make a lot of money this way because you only make money when someone clicks on your ad. In today?s world less than 5% of people click on ad, but add 5% to the many other ways you drive traffic and it could be good. How Much Could You Expect Once you have joined, banner ad networks operate pretty easily. The banner ad network provides you with a piece of HTML code that you insert on your site. Banner ad networks have been doing this for quite a while so after looking at your site they have a pretty good idea on what type of relevant ads will work. If you own a website that offers race car parts, they would not want to put dog bone ads on it. Like all of us, we are all in business to make a profit; trying to sell dog bones with car parts will not become profitable. Just as a heads up though, since you are in the network you may have very competitive ads against your primary business. Just be mentally prepared for this because you won?t be able to do much about it. Now for the money part, many networks sell what they call ?run of site? ads to advertiser. In doing this they are obtaining around 5 to 6 CPM for most of the ads. Remember what I said earlier on in this article, the network takes a big portion of the revenues ranging from 40-60%. In calculating this for you, my math comes out to be.035 cents per impression that shows on your site. If you generate 100,000 impressions a month you could expect to receive in the ball park of $350. Not bad for allowing a 125 X 125 ad to be placed on your site. So if you allow four ads to be placed on your site you could obtain $1,400 a month. This sounds great, unless these ads really start affecting your other business. Now comparing the same ad but on a CPC rate, you could receive anywhere from 5 cents to 25 cents. If you get a click rate of 5% on the high side, you could maybe clear $100. Sell Your Own Website Space If giving up control of so many things when you turn to a banner ad network scares you, there is another option. You could sell your own site space to advertisers but there are a few things you want to think about. With so many more sites wanting to sell space than advertisers to buy space, it does become challenging. The number one thing that advertisers consider is the layout and how captivating the site is. Advertisers are going to do their due diligence by checking out your traffic and the type of content you provide. These two things are what count because the more traffic and valuable content means better click through rates and conversions. Selling ad space to advertisers is really not rocket science, you just need to provide the information they need to make an informed decision. They will be looking for information like traffic, information about your readers, and how your site will compliment their ad. This concludes series IV of ?Become a Banner Ad Expert Starting Today?. I hope you have obtained more useful information and knowledge about banner ads and be watching for series V that will be coming out soon. Wishing you everlasting success, Your friend and mentor, Robert David Strong

Student Loans | Business and Finance

A higher education is expensive today and many families are experiencing financial problems with the downturn in the economy. This means that more students need to borrow more money than they have had to before.

So what?s out there, when it comes to loans, for a student who is on his or her way to college?

First, there are Federal student loans. To apply for any Federal student loan, and for many private loans from colleges and universities as well, a student, or the student?s parents, will have to fill out a FAFSA or a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is a lengthy process and the student, if he?s independent, or the student?s parents, will have to have up-to-date tax information before filling out the form.

Once the FAFSA is filled out a student will find out if he or she is eligible for Federal Student loans. Federal student loans are the most desirable loans available.

The interest rates on Federal Student loans are usually low and the student has a long period in which to pay back the borrowed money.

The best of Federal loans are subsidized federal loans ? Subsidized Stafford Loans and Federal Perkins loans.

Subsidized Stafford Loans:

Are available to students who demonstrate financial need.

Are interest free until ten months after the student graduates, leaves school, or becomes less than a half-time student.

?

Federal Perkins Loans:

Are even better than Subsidized Stafford Loans and go to students who have the greatest financial need.

Have an interest rate of 5%.

Do not need to be paid back for ten years after graduation.

Can be partially cancelled if the student decides to teach in a low income area or is a teacher of subjects that have a low number of teachers ? like math or science.

The Federal government also offers unsubsidized loans ? Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and PLUS Loans.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans:

Are not based on financial need.

Are available to any U.S. citizen who is free of drug felony charges.

PLUS Loans:

Are loans for parents of college students.

Parents must have good credit and proof of income.

There are private loans as well. They are available from banks and other lending institutions.

When applying for private student loans , look for low interest rates and low fees or no fees.

When thinking about loans ? whether funded by the Federal government or private lending institutions ? the place to start is at your college?s financial aid office.

Workers Comp is an Essential Investment for any Kind of Business ...

A lot of businesses sadly neglect a very important type of insurance. Because they work in a nice office, sit at a desk and don?t think that injuries could happen at their workplace, they assume they don?t need worker?s comp. Then it is only when something bad happens that they will regret it. Don?t let this happen to you, secure workers comp for your business in the Charlotte, NC area to protect your enterprise.

Many individuals believe that getting a worker?s compensation insurance is only necessary if your business involves dangerous occupations. However, the truth is that no one can really tell what can happen to him. You may think that since you work mainly on your desk at the office, the worker?s compensation insurance is not essential, but this does not hold true. Worker?s compensation really protects the workers who undertake hazardous work but it also protects all the employees in general, because you do not exactly know what you may chance upon. What if you got burned because the electrical system were faulty? Or the shelves you use are not put in right and things fall on you? Why take the risk of getting injured in the workplace without insurance. Secure a workers comp insurance quote so that you can be properly protected.

The other mistake individuals make is believing that since they don?t have sufficient workers, they don?t need worker?s comp. Even though NC state law doesn?t require workers comp unless you have 3 or more employees, it does not follow that you are not responsible if one of your workers obtain injuries. You are still completely liable financially. The only distinction is that there is no policy that will protect you, which means you will have to spend your own money for the expenses and if the injuries are severe, you might get insolvent. Worker?s Comp should be considered as an indispensable cost of carrying on business for any corporation.

An Incident Management Course or Crisis Management Online ...

Article Directory :: Reference & Education Articles

Police Departments and Sheriff's Offices across the country are incorporating crisis management questions in promotion exams. Table top exercises, oral boards, and written tests are used to evaluate a candidate's knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS). Many crisis management online courses offer at least one incident management course that provides the information needed to excel in these promotion exams.

During a recent police department's sergeant promotion exam board in Northern California, applicants were required to conduct a written exam, an oral interview, and a tactical evaluation. The tactical evaluation consisted of a table-top type exercise wherein the applicants were given partial information of a critical event that had theoretically just occurred. The applicants were then told to talk about how they would handle the situation and position/ re-position officers on the table-top as they received updated information every five minutes. The primary focus of the evaluation was to determine the applicants' understanding of the ICS and how to implement its elements. Several applicants were visibly more prepared than others and during a debrief of the applicants, it was found that the prepared applicants had taken an incident management course from an online source.

Finding a crisis management course is becoming much easier. The ICS is part of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and is designed to prepare agencies for large operations involving numerous resources. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers over 40 online courses that provide instruction for most public agencies, including public works, fire, and medical departments. The number of courses available makes it easy for any hopeful to find the information needed to excel in interview processes that involve a tactical evaluation.

One incident management course that may be the most important for law enforcement promotion exams, as well as being useful for actual incidents, is ICS-300. ICS-300 is designed for mid-management supervisors in the operation of the incident command. The information contained in ICS-300 is what is primarily used in the larger situations in which police agencies regularly find themselves. Any sergeant hopeful would be well advised to take ICS-300. One of the reasons ICS-300 is so important is that the course provides a good understanding of the four main components of the ICS: operations, finance, logistics, and intelligence/planning. Along with these four elements of ICS, ICS-300 also teaches the importance of setting up a proper incident command (IC) so that all involved personnel know where to send and receive updated information as to the critical incident. A properly established Incident Command greatly reduces the amount of chaos inherent to these types of crisis.

Crisis management online courses are available for every aspect of public safety. Some courses are even mandated by state and federal agencies in order for the department to be eligible for grant money. Whether mandated or not, taking at least one incident management course not only prepares an individual for promotion opportunities, it better prepares the individual for handling any large scale situation in which they might find themselves. Anyone assigned as a first responder should understand the basic concepts of the incident command system and how to establish an incident command.

Facebook IPO shows galactic divide between investors

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It's no surprise to anyone that big investors get preferential treatment on Wall Street.

Investors expressed disappointment, scepticism and even shock on Tuesday after learning that an analyst at lead underwriter Morgan Stanley cut his Facebook revenue forecasts in the days before the company's initial public offering - information that apparently did not reach small investors before the stock went public and subsequently tumbled.

The divide between the research and retail arms of big Wall Street firms has always been deep. A former Morgan Stanley broker described the relationship as being "like Venus and Mars," an allusion to a best-selling book about the inherent differences between men and women.

As more details about Facebook's IPO emerge, investors have been finger-pointing, complaining and speculating about what's next for the company, Morgan Stanley and the Nasdaq, which had trouble executing trades on the day of Facebook began trading publicly.

Reuters reported late Monday that Morgan Stanley cautioned major clients about revised revenue expectations in the days leading up to the stock's market debut. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, also underwriters of the IPO, cut their estimates for revenue.

Facebook shares tumbled 8.9 percent on Tuesday, closing at $31 (19.66 pounds), or more than 18 below their offering price.

"Night and day the institutional clients get things that we don't get," said a Morgan Stanley broker who found out about the revised analyst forecast second-hand from media reports published Tuesday. "It's a big issue."

"This again shows the inherent conflicts of investment banking," added Mercer Bullard, founder and president of Fund Democracy. "If they selectively disclosed to some clients and not to others, they are clearly favouring those clients over the rest."

"The allegations, if true, are a matter of regulatory concern" to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and to the SEC, FINRA Chief Executive Rick Ketchum told Reuters.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority on Tuesday called for a review of Facebook's IPO.

"This could have been a big win for everyone and could have led to a nice resurgence of tech related IPOs," said Knox Massey, managing partner at Keith-Massey Family Investments in Atlanta. "Instead, this experience may well have soured the market for a long time."

Some mom and pop investors are grumbling, too. "I should have gotten rid of it on Friday afternoon," said a financial services salesman in New York City who asked not to be named because he works with many firms involved in the deal. "I'm pissed that it fizzled ? I'm pissed that Morgan Stanley took the wind out of the IPO's sails during the road show."

The salesman purchased Facebook stock through a Morgan Stanley adviser, receiving several thousand Facebook shares. "I should have been worried when I got six times the allocation I asked for," he said.

On the Reuters Facebook page, readers engaged in a discussion about potential class-action lawsuits for investors who lost money because their buy, sell or cancellation orders were mishandled. "Investors got SCREWED!" wrote Eric Arthur Bazaldua. "At least I still own my Farmville Farm," added Joseph C. Robles.

Not everyone thinks Facebook's prospects are dim, though. Richard Laermer, CEO of social network ThankBank and a buyer of Facebook stock at the IPO, said analysts and the financial industries are unfairly punishing Facebook for leading a new social networking bubble. "Brands that use Facebook to bring the population into understanding what the company stands for," Laermer says. "They are already seeing benefits and making money off Facebook."

Arts & Entertainment - Atlantic City Weekly

Beyonc? performs at Revel May 25-28

ATLANTIC CITY ? Opening night was still a day away when entertainer Steve Lawrence stood on the stage of Atlantic City?s first casino showroom dressed casually in chino slacks, a polo shirt and a navy blue Chris Craft boating windbreaker.

Lawrence and his wife, singer Eydie Gorme, had accepted the challenge of being the first act to play the first legal casino to open outside the state of Nevada.

During a break from rehearsals in the Superstar Theatre of what was then known as Resorts International Casino Hotel, Lawrence said few in Atlantic City realized the change that was about to come over the city, especially with entertainment.

?We always loved playing Atlantic City and we?ve missed it,? Lawrence said of their decade-long gap in gigs, which occurred when Atlantic City fell on hard time during the 1960s and ?70s.

?Wait?ll you see what?s going to happen to this town. This is just the beginning,? he said. ?In a few years, there?ll be as many [entertainers] working here as there are in Las Vegas.?

Too bad Lawrence won?t be in Atlantic City to see that his prediction has come true, and in spades.

Through more than three decades of trial and error, Atlantic City?s casino industry has developed a loose formula for entertaining the 30 million people who visit each year. But on May 26, 1978, not even Lawrence could have predicted the unprecedented lineup of shows that awaits visitors over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Between Friday and Monday, Atlantic City will experience the single biggest weekend of entertainment the town has ever seen, and with the most demographically diverse collection of artists, too. Few cities anywhere can match the quality, quantity and calibre of shows this weekend, if ever.

Quite literally, there?s something for every entertainment taste, ranging from Beyonc??s four shows at Revel as part of the property?s grand opening celebration to reggae god Bob Marley?s legendary band The Wailers performing. And in between, there?s headliners performing rock, pop, country, comedy, R&B, techno music and more.

Joe Lupo, senior vice president of operations at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, says entertainment is one of the keys in separating Atlantic City from other regions where casino-style gambling is merely a stand-along attraction, not part of an overall destination experience.

Silicon Valley tech exec accused of Lego thefts

This is an undated booking photo, provided by the Mountain View Police, of Thomas Langenbach, taken in Mountain View, Calif. Langenbach, a Silicon Valley technology executive, is facing charges after authorities say he changed the bar codes on Lego toys at a Target store to buy them for less. (AP Photo/Mountain View Police)

(AP) ? A Silicon Valley software executive put fake bar codes on Lego sets at various Target stores, bought the toys at a steep discount, then sold them online for thousands of dollars, authorities said.

Thomas Langenbach, 47, appeared in court Tuesday on four felony counts of burglary that could net him up to five years in prison if convicted. He did not enter a plea.

Authorities say Langenbach bought Lego sets at Target stores but covered their original bar codes with his own bar-code stickers to get a cheaper price.

Examples of his thefts included a $279 box of Millenium Falcon Legos he bought for $49 and a $90 Anakin Skywalker Lego set he got for $35, said Cindy Seeley Hendrickson, supervising deputy district attorney for Santa Clara County.

When police obtained a search warrant for Langenbach's posh home south of San Francisco, they said they found hundreds of sets of the colorful toy bricks, many of which he sold on eBay under the name "tomsbrickyard."

Authorities say Langenbach's house in San Carlos also was filled with Lego creations he had built himself.

Eight baggies of bar code stickers were found in his car, police said.

Langenbach works for German software giant SAP. His LinkedIn profile lists him as a vice president in a Northern California division.

He was already under surveillance by Target security officers who suspected him of the scheme when they spotted him at the chain's Mountain View store May 8. After he completed his purchases using the bogus bar codes, the store called police and Langenbach was arrested, authorities said.

"This particular crime, the way it was done, the sophistication, the amount of expenditure in time and money to do it, suggests there's something way beyond money that motivated him to do it," Hendrickson said.

Attempts to reach Langenbach, who is free on bail, were unsuccessful.

Len slams 'Dancing' star William's sexy freestyle

    Adam Taylor / ABC

The crowd loved Cheryl and William's freestyle on Monday, but judge Len Goodman? Not so much.

    By Ree Hines

The pre-finale performance show usually sees mellow ballroom behavior from the judges on "Dancing With the Stars." After all, at this point in the competition, the dancers are presumably the best of the best and the routines are bound to be fairly good. So the panel tends to focus on the positives and let their scores speak for themselves -- except not this time.

No, on Monday night, head judge Len Goodman went rogue and broke from the friendly banter and high-praise his fellow panelists dished out and instead revealed exactly what was on his mind.

Fans of real criticism on the show would normally cheer an unexpected treat like that, but there was just one problem: Len's outburst wasn't exactly well aimed.

After heaping accolades on finalist William Levy when the star delivered a 30-point cha cha in the judges' pick round, Len attacked the actor over his follow-up freestyle.

William hit the floor with a sexy, mash-up Latin routine that transitioned from a tango beat to a smooth salsa, with dashes of cha cha and samba along the way. It was the perfect pick for the hip-shaking star who started out as a dance newbie, but mastered many Latin routines over the past few weeks.

But Len didn't see it that way.

"For me, it was too predictable," he ranted. "All you do is shake your butt and get the women screaming. I wanted more. I wanted to see something different. I'm fed up with it!?... I didn't want a salsa with lifts!"

And when fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba dared to claim the routine was groundbreaking, Len interrupted her to shout, "What ground? It was a salsa!"

The freestyle effort won William a score of 29 points -- yes, after all of that guff, Len knocked off?only?one point -- but it didn't win the head judge any love from the ballroom crowd. The audience booed the "Dancing" vet.

Host with most?Tom Bergeron summed it up best.

"I think Len's suffering from bum envy, frankly," he said with a knowing nod to the audience.

But that wasn't the only point in the night when Len broke away from the shared opinions of the panel, and it wasn't the only time the audience booed him.

The second incident happened when Green Bay Packer Donald Driver put on his first dance. In a reworking of his Argentine tango from week five, Donald offered an improved version of the earlier effort.

Carrie Ann applauded the "crispness" of the dance. Bruno Tonioli found it "effective." But Len thought the wide receiver played it too "careful" and knocked off a point from what would have otherwise been a perfect score. The boos were back.

Now, eagle-eyed dance fans might have noticed that Len had a point with that critique. Donald's partner, Peta Murgatroyd, did the bulk of the work in the number while the NFL star hardly had more than a couple of flicks and one strong pivot as his claim to fame. But considering the fact that Katherine Jenkins performed an equally careful paso doble in her first round without so much as a negative word from Len, one has to wonder what the judge's selective problem was.

Luckily for Donald, the problem didn't last long. Once he hit the dance floor for his country-themed freestyle, complete with synchronized line-dance moves and one of the longest and most dangerous lifts the show has seen, Len couldn't think of a single bad thing to say. And for the first time all season, he couldn't think of a reason not to give Donald a well-earned 10 (as Carrie Ann and Bruno did too).

Despite the standout performances from William and Donald, it was Katherine who took the top spot on the leaderboard.

After raking in 30 points for the aforementioned paso (and her first 10 from Len too), her frenetic freestyle scored the same from the panel. Oddly enough, out of all the routines on Monday night, it was the one most worthy of Len's (or Carrie Ann's or Buno's) criticism. While the routine was filled with fast-paced, big-swing content, it was so fast paced that it led to sloppy leg lines and awkward lifts. ?

Despite all the hubbub of the night, by the time it was over, only one point separated the stars in the judges' ranking. That means viewer votes will have a big say in how things play out on Tuesday night's finale, but possibly not the deciding say. There's still one more dance to go -- a routine the dancers have?only?24 hours to prepare for -- and the judges will have the only say about that one.

With the final performances over, which star do you think deserves to waltz away with the mirror ball trophy? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page and be sure to join me and Anna Chan for our weekly "DWTS" live chat Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
