Isaac steers clear of direct blow on New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac's whistling winds lashed this city and the storm dumped nearly a foot of rain on its darkened and desolate streets, but the system of levee pumps, walls and gates appeared to withstand one of the stiffest challenges yet. To the north and south, though, people had to be evacuated or rescued as Isaac lingered over Louisiana.

The rain fell almost constantly for more than a day, flooding neighborhoods in a rural part of the state and as far away as Mississippi. Officials had to respond quickly because the waters were rising fast ? even as Isaac meandered slowly northward Thursday on a path toward Arkansas.

President Barack Obama declared federal emergencies in Louisiana and Mississippi late Wednesday, according to a statement from the White House. The disaster declarations free up federal aid for affected areas.

Along the shores of Lake Ponchartrain, officials sent scores of buses and dozens of high-water vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as rising waters lapped against houses and left cars stranded. Floodwaters rose waist-high in some neighborhoods, and the Louisiana National Guard was working with sheriff's deputies to rescue people stranded in their homes.

The floodwaters "were shockingly fast-rising, from what I understand from talking to people," Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said. "It caught everybody by surprise."

Isaac arrived seven years after Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city's fortified levee system easily handled the assault.

"Unfortunately, that's not been the case for low-lying areas outside the federal system, in particular lower Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes," said Louisiana Democratic US. Sen. Mary Landrieu. "Hurricane Isaac has reinforced for us once again just how vulnerable these critical areas are. We must re-engage the Corps of Engineers on this."

Jerry Larpenter, sheriff in nearby Terrebonne Parish, said he thinks the storm's impact took many by surprise.

"I think a lot of people were caught with their pants down," he said. "This storm was never predicted right since it entered the Gulf. It was supposed to go to Florida, Panama City, Biloxi, New Orleans. We hope it loses its punch once it comes in all the way."

New Orleans' biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding. One person was reported killed, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

But in Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over an 18-mile levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall to relieve the strain.

Officials rushed to evacuate more than 100 nursing home residents from Plaquemines Parish, an area with a reputation for weathering storms and perhaps the hardest hit by Isaac. In this hardscrabble, mostly rural parish, even the sick and elderly are hardened storm veterans.

"I don't think we had to evacuate to begin with," said Romaine Dahl, 59, as he sat in a wheelchair. "The weather was a hell of a lot worse last night than it is now. And I got an idea that after all this is said and done they're going to say everything is over with, go on back home."

Other residents in the Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center were loaded into ambulances and taken to a nearby naval station. Residents had their names and birth dates attached to their shirts.

Josephine King, 84, handled the move well, waiting in a wheelchair. "I'm feeling good," she said.

By midafternoon Wednesday, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm. The Louisiana National Guard ceased rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, saying it felt confident it had gotten everyone out. There were no serious injuries. National Guard spokesman Capt. Lance Cagnolatti said guardsmen would stay in the area over the coming days to help.

By early Thursday, Isaac's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 50 mph. Even at its strongest, the storm was far weaker than Hurricane Katrina, which crippled New Orleans in 2005. Because Isaac's coiled bands of rain and wind were moving at only 5 mph ? about the pace of a brisk walk ? the threat of storm surges and flooding was expected to linger Thursday as the immense comma-shaped system crawled across Louisiana.

The storm knocked out power to as many as 700,000 people, stripped branches off trees and flattened fields of sugar cane so completely that they looked as if a tank had driven over them.

In coastal Mississippi, officials used small motorboats Wednesday to rescue at least two dozen people from a neighborhood Isaac flooded in Pearlington. In addition, the National Weather Service said there were reports of at least three possible tornadoes touching down in coastal counties. No injuries were reported.

None of the reports had been confirmed. Until the weather clears, there is no way for survey teams to assess the area to determine whether damage was done by tornadoes or straight-line winds, said NWS Meteorologist Shawn O'Neil.

Back in New Orleans, the storm canceled remembrance ceremonies for those killed by Katrina. Since that catastrophe, the city's levee system has been bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements. The bigger, stronger levees were tested for the first time by Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

Isaac came ashore late Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, with 80 mph winds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It drove a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland.

In Vermilion Parish, a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle ahead of the storm. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. New Orleans reported at about 10 inches in some places as rain continued to fall late Wednesday.

As hard wind and heavy rain pelted Melba Leggett-Barnes' home in the Lower 9th Ward, an area leveled during Katrina, she felt more secure than she did seven years ago.

"I have a hurricane house this time," said Barnes, who has been living in her newly rebuilt home since 2008. She and her husband, Baxter Barnes, were among the first to get a home through Brad Pitt's Make It Right program.

Her yellow house with a large porch and iron trellis was taking a beating but holding strong.

"I don't have power, but I'm all right," said Barnes, a cafeteria worker for the New Orleans school system.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move farther inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend. The storm was expected to weaken to a tropical depression Thursday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Ohio service planned for hero-astronaut Armstrong

(AP) ? Lunar pioneers plan to attend a private service in Ohio for astronaut Neil Armstrong, following an event to announce a children's health fund in his honor.

The first man to walk on the moon died last week at age 82. His family scheduled the private service Friday in Cincinnati. A public memorial service is being planned for early September in Washington, D.C.

Eugene Cernan (SIR'-nun) and James Lovell are expected at the announcement of the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to that fund or two scholarships in Armstrong's name.

Afterward, the former astronauts and others, NASA officials, family members, and friends will attend the private service. Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio will give the eulogy.

Cernan flew two moon missions and is the last man to have walked on the moon. Lovell's four space missions included commanding the harrowing Apollo 13 flight that was recounted in his book and depicted in the popular movie, in which Tom Hanks played Lovell.

A complete list hasn't been released, but other attendees will include Apollo astronaut William Anders and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Cincinnati Children's spokesman Jim Feur said the hospital is still working out the details for the Armstrong fund. Cernan and Lovell were to be joined at the hospital by patient Shane DiGiovanna, 14. He has a rare tissue disease and received a cochlear implant that allows him to hear. The cochlear device was developed by a NASA scientist.

Armstrong's family described Armstrong, who largely shunned publicity after his moon mission, as "a reluctant American hero."

Raised in rural western Ohio in Wapakoneta, he developed an early love for aviation. He served as a U.S. Navy pilot flying combat missions in Korea, then became a test pilot after finishing college. Accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962, he commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966.

He then commanded Apollo 11's historic moon landing on July 20, 1969. As a worldwide audience watched on TV, Armstrong took the step on the lunar surface he called "one giant leap for mankind."

After his space career, he returned to Ohio, teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and generally avoiding public view for most of the rest of his life.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in suburban Indian Hill. He had two sons from a previous marriage.

Two UC student groups interested in space will gather Friday evening on a campus lawn with telescopes for viewing the moon, and to hear some of Armstrong's former students speak.

In announcing his death, Armstrong's family requested that when people "see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Many men & women suffer from the problem of blackheads, wrinkled skin, blemishes & sun damage. There are very few people blessed with naturally glowing skin without any effort. The worst thing for any women from which they fear are the occurrence of the wrinkles. When the pores of the skin get blocked due to dirt accumulation, then it leads to the blackheads and whiteheads. A blackhead or white once gets infected can lead to a pimple filled with pus ? the skin?s response to inflammation. Popping these pimples can cause permanent scarring on your skin. Hence, it is advised that treat your pimples with more natural products and with gentle care.

To avoid the acne burning and scarring, you should clean your skin using a mild and non-drying soap or cream cleanser which is suitable for your skin type. Ladies must remove all their make-up before going to sleep ? not doing this will further clog their skin pores and will cause more acne breakouts. Washing your face twice daily and avoiding scrubbing or washing your skin too harshly is also quite useful.

There are many ways to treat sagging, wrinkled and puffy skin like getting a facelift and also chemical peels. But all of these methods cost a lot of money and not everyone is able to spend their hard earned money to wipe those lines of aging. The herbal facial masks & the home treatments are among the quite effective ways to keep the wrinkles away.

It is true that you cannot completely get rid of the wrinkles and aging signs, but by using these ways you can definitely improve your skin tone making it more appealing and shinier making them more rejuvenated and revitalized. Below given are two recipes which you can make at your home getting the best results? You can add these ingredients to your herbal skin care, to get an extra punch.

First is the Egg White Lemon Mask which is made by combining egg white with ½ teaspoon of salt, & juice of half a lemon. After that apply that mixture on the face for around 15 minutes & then wash it off using the water. It works quite well to improve the tone of the skin and also tightens the wrinkled skin. Another one is honey anti-wrinkle mask for which you?ll need about 1 ½ tablespoon of the honey, a pinch of the baking soda, and another ½ teaspoon of the carrot juice. You will also need to mix carrot juice together with honey first and then you can easily apply it on the face. Keep it for around 30 minutes and then remove it using a cotton pad or the wash cloth dipped in the warm water to which the soda is added.

US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

Armstrong makes his "one small step"

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Armstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

President Obama described him as "one of the greatest American heroes of all time"

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

The statement did not say where Armstrong died.

He had surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries on 7 August.

Mars rover Curiosity aces test drive, proving it can, indeed, rove

Mars rover covered nearly 23 feet in 16 minutes ? 'a very big moment,' mission scientists say. The landing site, Bradbury Landing, honors science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury.

NASA scientists speak at a briefing at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., on Wednesday in front of a picture of writer Ray Bradbury. Scientists named the Curiosity touchdown area Bradbury Landing.

The successful test of the rover's ability to leave Bradbury Landing ? the name the science team has given to the rover's landing spot to honor science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury, who passed away in June ? marks a significant milestone in the check-out process.

Now the team is preparing to begin what they term an intermission, lasting from a few days to a week. Although the period sounds like Curiosity is getting a break, it isn't. Scientists will use the period to perform initial check-outs of one of two remaining instruments on the first-tests list, as well as put several currently operating instruments through more advanced tests.

When that period ends, it's off to Glenelg, an intriguing junction of three geological features some 440 yards from Curiosity's current location.

Since it landed on the Red Planet early on the morning Aug. 6, Eastern Standard Time, the rover has passed virtually all of its tests so far with flying colors. One glitch cropped up as the ground team tested one of the wind sensors on the rover's weather station. Otherwise, the check-out process has gone flawlessly, mission officials say.

As for the significance of Curiosity's shakedown cruise, the mission's project manager, Peter Theisinger, put it bluntly: "We built a rover, and unless the rover roves, we really haven't accomplished anything."

"The fact that we completely exercised it and everything was on track" means the event marked a "very big moment," he added during a briefing on Wednesday at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

After demonstrating that its wheels had their full range of steering motion Tuesday, Curiosity covered about 15 feet early Wedensday before it stopped and performed a 120 degree turn. It took time out to capture images of its tracks, then threw itself into reverse for another 8 feet before calling it a day.

Curiosity's new parking spot puts it in a good position to explore Goulburn ? one of four regions around Bradbury Landing scoured when the the rover's rocket-powered "skycrane" hovered above the ground as it lowered Curiosity to the surface via tethers.

The science team is thinking about spending a few days examining Goulburn and the other skycrane scours with three of the rover's 10 instruments.

Goulburn is one of two targets the rover's ChemCam has zapped with its laser, which vaporizes material it zaps. Light from the tiny bursts of plasma the laser generates carry information on the material's chemical composition, which spectrometers inside Curiosity's body reads.

The laser's first target, a 3-inch rock dubbed Coronation, proved to be basalt ? a type of rock that forms as magma cools and hardens. After taking the chemical measure of Coronation, ChemCam's science team had Curiosity zap three locations on exposed bedrock at Goulburn and found more basalt. But the points the laser hits cover a patch of rock surface about the size of a pin head, so researchers are interested in using a suite of three instruments, including ChemCam, to give Goulburn and its three amigos ? Burnside, Hepburn, and Sleepy Dragon ? a close look.

Although Glenelg is only 440 yards away, it's likely to take weeks to get there. Along the way, if the team runs across fine-grained material, it will stop and use the deposits to test the Curiosity's ability to scoop samples and deliver them to its internal chemistry labs, says Joy Crisp, the rover's deputy project scientist. Researchers have talked about a one-month stay at Glenelg.

"After Glenelg, we head for Mt. Sharp," she says. "That will be a much longer drive, perhaps with some brief stops along the way.

That leg of Curiosity's journey is likely to take several months, she says. ??

Canada retail sales unexpectedly fall on broad weakness

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian retail trade in June expectedly dropped by 0.4 percent from May on weaker sales in stores, gas stations and auto dealers, Statistics Canada data indicated on Wednesday.

The figures are the latest to suggest that consumer spending -- one of the main supports for the Canadian economy since the 2008 crisis -- is slowing down. Market operators had predicted a 0.1 percent month-on-month increase.

Falls were reported in seven of the 11 subsectors, representing 64 percent of retail sales. Sales volume dropped by 0.1 percent.

General merchandise store receipts were down 1.5 percent, in part due to store closures. Gas station sales fell by 1.3 percent on lower prices, while sales at motor vehicles and parts dealers dropped by 0.4 percent.

Stripping out sales by motor vehicles and parts dealers, retail sales fell by 0.4 percent. Overall retail sales were 1.7 percent higher than in June 2011.

97% Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (2)

A movie that somehow mixes apprehension for Ai with a feeling of warmth and, certainly, fun.

Affable and unpretentious, Ai comes across as a cagey operator whose candor is very appealing.

It's likely to change the way you think about art and politics and the state of China today.

Using archival footage dating back to Ai's adventures in the New York art world in his 20s, Klayman traces his evolution as a creator and as an activist.

Though he has paid the price, Ai is a pathfinder in this new phenomenon in tactical insurrection. Never Sorry is a new-style profile in 21st-century courage.

Ai admits that he's become "a brand for liberal thinking and individualism," though that's nothing to be ashamed of -- at this point, his Warholian talent for self-promotion may be the only thing keeping him alive.

A powerful film that teaches us as much about ourselves as it does it's subject, "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry," is a sure bet to be nominated for an Oscar come January 2013.

This riveting documentary deserves consideration for year-end awards. Klayman gained unprecedented access to this very photogenic man with a dynamic personality.

The film's recurring theme is of an artist on a perpetual hunt for transparency, in his country and abroad.

A lively, informative, funny and inspirational portrait of a courageous, charismatic, highly original man.

His willingness to speak out despite severe consequences is inspiring, and his recent silence speaks almost as loudly as his work in calling attention to China's repressive tactics.

This essential, finely honed biographical portrait is jollied along by all the ironies and complexities of modern China.

Who doesn't hate it when critics say, "this is an important documentary you must see!" Well, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is a critically important documentary you need to see.

Though we might wish for more insight or explanation, Klayman's film remains an incredible document of a courageous individual who the Chinese officials would prefer to make disappear.

The boundaries between performance and protest are virtuosically, vitally fuddled in this stirring documentary chronicling three years in the life of Ai Weiwei, the outspoken Chinese artist and dissident.

The artist repudiated the repudiation. Art had, as art always should have, the last word.

Fascinating account of Weiwei's practice and politics that gives centre stage to his charismatic personality.

This is how a documentary portrait should be done.

Klayman's all-access, warts-and-all coverage of this artist's struggles with the State represents an extension of Ai's own ideals about transparency and freedom of expression.

[H]as a sense of the gloss to it: Ai is such a complex man, and he's operating in an environment that is alien to most Westerners, and so at every turn here, I wanted to get into much more depth than Klayman takes us to.

Parasitic wasps remember better if reward is greater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Two parasitic wasp species show similar memory consolidation patterns in response to rewards of different quality, providing evidence that the reward value affects the type of memory that is consolidated. The full results are reported Aug. 22 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

The researchers, led by Marjolein Kruidhof of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, tested how wasps store scents associated with situations of low reward (egg-laying into a inferior-quality host species that lays single eggs) versus high reward (egg-laying into a superior-quality host species that lays egg clusters) in their brain.

They found that both wasp species behaved similarly, retaining memory for the scent associated with the high reward scenario to a greater extent compared to the low reward scenario.

They write that this behavior makes sense given the energetic cost of consolidating shorter-lasting memory forms into long-term, consolidated memories, which may only be advantageous if the benefit is sufficiently high.

Increase productivity by exploring the ... - Sydney Business Month

Let?s take some time to truly explore what areas your business can look at to achieve the ?productivity improvements you?ve been talking about.?

While inevitably the outcome of increased productivity is a dollar figure, you must ensure that not only have you explored productivity improvements in your labour, but also among the myriad of other aspects of your business.?A simplistic definition of productivity is ratio of output to input. The key drivers of productivity are: efficiency of people, processes and equipment:

Human productivity

  • Improved skills and training ? remember an investment in employees is an investment in your business

David Tyler's discovery could reduce waste made in the methyl methacrylate process

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon chemists have identified a catalyst that could dramatically reduce the amount of waste made in the production of methyl methacrylate, a monomer used in the large-scale manufacturing of lightweight, shatter-resistant alternatives to glass such as Plexiglas.

David Tyler, Charles J. and M. Monteith Jacobs Professor of Chemistry, presented his findings Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

Global production of methyl methacrylate was 4 million metric tons in 2010. Each kilogram produced also yields 2.5 kilograms of ammonium hydrogen sulfate, a corrosive byproduct that is not usable. Disposal of ammonium hydrogen sulfate is extremely energy intensive, consuming 2 percent of the energy used in Texas annually.

Tyler's team has identified a catalyst that doesn't produce ammonium hydrogen sulfate.

"There were some really fundamental chemical reasons why previous catalysts didn't work with this process," Tyler said. "We've found a catalyst that overcomes all of those objections."

With the identification of a working catalyst, Tyler will focus his research on how to accelerate the conversion to methyl methacrylate. The industrial standard for a practical catalyst is conversion of acetone cyanohydrin into methyl methacrylate in the span of a minute or two, Tyler said.

Superb Ba goal gets Newcastle off to winning start

Senegal striker Demba Ba scored a sublime goal to help Newcastle defeat Tottenham 2-1 on the opening weekend of the English Premier League season.

Nigerian Peter Odemwingie was also on target, converting a penalty as West Brom crushed Liverpool 3-0 in their first match under former Reds assistant manager Steve Clarke.

Cameroon-born 16-year-old Fabrice Olinga, meanwhile, became the youngest player to score in the Spanish La Liga when he came off the bench to snatch a late winner for Malaga at Celta Vigo.

ENGLAND

DEMBA BA (Newcastle)

The Senegal striker produced an early contender for goal of the season as he opened the scoring with a sublime strike in his side's 2-1 win over Tottenham at St James' Park. Ba struck in the 55th minute when he controlled Kyle Walker's miscued header before lashing a curling effort into the top corner from the left side of the penalty area.

PETER ODEMWINGIE (West Brom)

The Nigeria striker kept his nerve to score a crucial penalty in his side's 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool at the Hawthorns. Albion were leading 1-0 but had missed an earlier penalty when Shane Long's tame effort was saved by Pepe Reina. When Martin Skrtel conceded another penalty in the 64th minute, Odemwingie took over the spot-kick duties and drilled his shot into the net.

YAYA TOURE (Man City)

The Ivory Coast midfielder helped the Premier League champions start their title defence in familiar fashion with a dramatic 3-2 win over Southampton at Eastlands. City had come from 2-1 behind to beat QPR and take the title on the final day of last season thanks to two stoppage-time goals. Driven on by Toure, they recovered from the same deficit against promoted Southampton thanks to late goals from Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri.

JOHN OBI MIKEL (Chelsea)

The Nigeria midfielder gave a typically combative display as the European champions kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win at Wigan. Roberto Di Matteo's side scored twice in the first seven minutes and comfortably held the lead, with Mikel excelling in the holding role in front of the defence.

GERVINHO (Arsenal)

The Ivory Coast striker was unable to lift the gloom at the Emirates Stadium after Robin van Persie's exit as the Gunners were held 0-0 by Sunderland. Gervinho played wide on the left of an attacking trio but squandered the few chances that came his way. Arsenal fans, frustrated by van Persie's move to Manchester United and their team's poor performance, responded by booing the players at full-time.

FRANCE

ALAIN SIBIRI TRAORE (Lorient)

Burkina Faso striker Traore grabbed the equaliser a minute into stoppage time which put Lorient on their way to a come-from-behind 2-1 win at home against champions Montpellier. Montpellier had looked set for victory before 23-year-old Traore's powerful shot from 25 metres and, two minutes later, Jeremy Aliadiere's winner gave the Breton side their first win of the season.

SALOMON KALOU (Lille)

Lille's Ivorian forward Kalou, who arrived on a free transfer following his release from Chelsea this summer, grabbed the equaliser in a 1-1 home draw to Nancy. In front of a sell-out crowd at Lille's impressive new 50,000-seat stadium, the 2011 double winners fell behind to a Djamel Bakar strike but drew level before the break thanks to 26-year-old Kalou's headed effort.

MAX-ALAIN GRADEL (Saint Etienne)

The 24-year-old Ivorian winger slotted home a penalty two minutes into injury time but it was not enough to prevent Saint Etienne falling 2-1 at Toulouse for their second loss in as many games this season.

SPAIN

FABRICE OLINGA (Malaga)

The 16-year-old made history Saturday when he became the youngest player to score in La Liga, grabbing the only goal as Malaga clinched a 1-0 victory at promoted Celta Vigo. The Cameroon-born forward came on as a substitute to make his league debut and got the 84th-minute winner as the new season got under way.

WAKASO MUBARAK (Espanyol)

The Ghanaian midfielder, signed in the summer from relegated Villarreal, scored Espanyol's goal in their 2-1 defeat at Mallorca. Debutant Mubarak superbly controlled a high ball and curled a left-foot shot home in the first half but two Tomer Hemed goals won the game for the home team.

NABIL EL ZHAR (Levante)

Morocco midfielder El Zhar scored Levante's goal in the 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid. The ex-Liverpool player reacted quickest to a corner on five minutes to sweep the ball home for his first goal of the season.

Nasa's Mars rover zaps first rock

Nasa's Curiosity rover has zapped its first Martian rock.

The robot fired its ChemCam laser at a tennis-ball-sized stone lying about 2.5m away on the ground.

The brief but powerful burst of light from the instrument vapourised the surface of the rock, revealing details of its basic chemistry.

This was just target practice for ChemCam, proving it is ready to begin the serious business of investigating the geology of the Red Planet.

It is part of a suite of instruments on the one-tonne robot, which landed two weeks ago in a deep equatorial depression known as Gale Crater.

Over the course of one Martian year, Curiosity will try to determine whether past environments at its touchdown location could ever have supported life.

The US-French ChemCam instrument will be a critical part of that investigation, helping to select the most interesting objects for study.

The inaugural target of the laser was a 7cm-wide rock dubbed "Coronation" (previously N165).

It had no particular science value, and was expected to be just another lump of ubiquitous Martian basalt, a volcanic rock.

Its appeal was the nice smooth face it offered to the laser.

ChemCam zapped it with 30 pulses of infrared light during a 10-second period.

Curiosity - Mars Science Laboratory

  • Mission goal is to determine whether Mars has ever had the conditions to support life
  • Project costed at $2.5bn; will see initial surface operations lasting two Earth years
  • Onboard plutonium generators will deliver heat and electricity for at least 14 years
  • 75kg science payload more than 10 times as massive as those of earlier US Mars rovers
  • Equipped with tools to brush and drill into rocks, to scoop up, sort and sieve samples
  • Variety of analytical techniques to discern chemistry in rocks, soil and atmosphere
  • Will try to make first definitive identification of organic (carbon rich) compounds

Each pulse delivered to a tiny spot more than a million watts of power for about five billionths of a second.

The instrument observed the resulting spark through a telescope; the component colours would have told scientists which atomic elements were present.

"We got a great spectrum of Coronation - lots of signal," said ChemCam principal investigator Roger Wiens of Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.

"Our team is both thrilled and working hard, looking at the results. After eight years building the instrument, it's pay-off time."

The first science target for ChemCam will be bedrock exposed on the ground next to Curiosity by the rocket-powered crane used to lower the vehicle to the crater floor on 6 August (GMT).

Exhaust from this descent stage scattered surface grit and pebbles to reveal a harder, compact material underneath.

The crane made four scour marks in the ground - two either side of the rover. These have been dubbed Burnside, Goulburn, Hepburn and Sleepy Dragon - names taken from ancient rock formations in Canadian North America.

Goulburn Scour will be zapped by ChemCam once the mission team has reviewed fully the Coronation performance and results.

  • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
  • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
  • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
  • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
  • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

The?Mars rover Curiosity?zapped a rock scientists are now calling "Coronation" on Sunday (Aug. 19) to test an instrument that measures the composition of targets hit by its powerful laser beam. The rover fired 30 laser pulses in 10 seconds at the fist-size Coronation rock in order to analyze the results.

"We got a great spectrum of Coronation ? lots of signal," said Roger Wiens, lead scientist for the rover's laser-wielding instrument at the Los Almos National Laboratory in New Mexico, in a statement. "Our team is both thrilled and working hard, looking at the results. After eight years building the instrument, it's payoff time!"

Curiosity's?Chemical and Camera instrument, or ChemCam, fires a laser pulses that last just five one-billionths of a second but deliver more than a million watts of power, enough to turn solid rock into an ionized plasma. A trio of spectrometers in the tool then studies the sparks from the laser fire on 6,144 different wavelengths of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light to determine the composition of the vaporized rock.

Sunday's laser firing was primarily target practice for Curiosity, but early results suggest the high-tech instrument is working well, mission managers said. Data from the test showed ChemCam is performing even better than in ground tests on Earth, they added.

"It's so rich, we can expect great science from investigating what might be thousands of targets with ChemCam in the next two years," said instrument deputy project scientist Sylvestre Maurice of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie (IRAP) in Toulouse, France.

ChemCam is one of 10 instruments packed on Curiosity that rely on the rover's plutonium power source to study?Mars. The $2.5 billion rover landed on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 and is expected to explore its Gale Crater landing site for the next two years to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life.

Tropical storm hits Mexico coast, quickly weakens

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) ? Tropical Storm Helene quickly weakened into a tropical depression Saturday after moving ashore on Mexico's Gulf Coast, then degenerated into a rain storm by night without bringing reports of significant damage.

Authorities had worried Helene's rains could pose a threat to areas where thousands of people are recovering from flooding spawned last week by Hurricane Ernesto, but the Veracruz state civil defense office said none of the region's numerous rivers had overflowed. Some streets flooded in low-lying neighborhoods of the port city of Veracruz.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system still had winds of about 30 mph (45 kph) late Saturday. It was 85 miles (140 kilometers) west-northwest of the port of Tampico, and was expected to dissipate Sunday.

The storm came ashore early Saturday in a lush coastal region of oil centers and tourist resorts with hundreds of towns and villages lying beside streams and rivers that can swell dangerously in heavy rain. Many were evacuated as Ernesto approached last week, and flood damage left some 10,000 people homeless.

The U.S. hurricane center said an additional 2 inches (5 centimeters) to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain could fall across northern Veracruz, southern Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosi state.

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gordon strengthened into a hurricane Saturday as it moved eastward on a track that could take it near the eastern Azores islands Sunday night. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (175 kph) late Saturday. It was 455 miles (730 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores and moving to the east at 22 mph (35 kph).

Calm returns to Gabon, opposition vows to fight on

Calm returned to Gabon's capital Friday as the nation celebrated its independence day, though opposition supporters vowed to continue their campaign to oust President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

A traditional military parade through Libreville showed little sign of the tension seen Wednesday when violent clashes broke out after police stopped an unauthorised protest in support of opposition leader Andre Mba Obame.

One person died during the clashes, according to the National Union (UN) opposition, and a television station belonging to Mba Obame was torched.

In a televised address to the nation ahead of independence celebrations, a defiant Bongo warned he would not tolerate any further uprising.

"I won't let chaos into Gabon. The law must be respected and it will be," he said.

Thousands of people have turned out to support Mba Obame, a former member of the ruling party who defected to the opposition, since he returned to Gabon on August 11 from 14 months in exile over health problems.

His return sparked the worst violence since the disputed 2009 election which saw Bongo succeed his father Omar as president following the leader's death earlier that year after 42 years in power.

Mba Obame, who claims he won the election, left Gabon in 2011 after declaring himself elected head of state, refusing to recognise Bongo's poll victory.

His UN party was subsequently dissolved and therefore does not have the right to organise demonstrations.

However, it called a demonstration on Wednesday in the centre of Libreville, despite having no official authorisation.

Protestors torched garbage bins and threw stones at police, who responded by firing tear gas.

According to the party, a 22-year-old woman died in the violence.

Gabon's health ministry said the woman who was known to be asthmatic died "of natural causes". But an unnamed hospital source said the death was "likely due to a reaction to tear gas."

The police, which the UN party has accused of firing on protesters, denies any death was linked to the clashes.

Since Mba Obame's return, the UN party has clearly said it intends to oust Ali Bongo.

Speaking of a grave crisis, the party has been calling for a national conference that would produce a new constitution and elections.

"It's not by force or violence that we are going to solve this crisis but by a meeting between Gabonese," said the UN party's president Zacharie Myboto on Wednesday. "People are ready to continue the fight."

The government has rejected the idea, insisting there is no crisis in Gabon and saying Mba Obame and the UN party overstepped the legal limits by proclaiming himself president in 2011 and organising unauthorised rallies.
