Kerry tries to mend Afghan relations with increasingly hostile Karzai

KABUL (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry embarked on talks Monday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai amid concerns Karzai may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with his anti-American rhetoric. The session came shortly after the U.S. military ceded control of its last detention facility in Afghanistan, ending a longstanding irritant in relations.

During Kerry's 24-hour visit to the country ? his sixth since President Barack Obama became president but his first as Obama's secretary of State ? Kerry planned to meet with Karzai, civic leaders and others to discuss continued U.S. assistance to the country and how to wean it from such aid as the international military operation winds down, and upcoming national elections.

Karzai has infuriated U.S. officials by accusing Washington of colluding with Taliban insurgents to keep Afghanistan weak even as the Obama administration presses ahead with plans to hand off security responsibility to Afghan forces and end NATO's combat mission by the end of next year.

U.S. officials accompanying Kerry said he did not plan to lecture Karzai or dwell on the apparent animosity but would make clear once again that the U.S. did not take such allegations lightly, They said he would press Karzai on the need for the April 2014 elections to meet international standards and continue to stress the importance of Afghan reconciliation and U.S. support for a Taliban office in Qatar where talks could occur.

Karzai is expected to travel to Qatar within the week and some movement on the opening of an office is likely then.

Kerry, who arrived in Kabul from Amman, Jordan, had hoped also to travel to Pakistan on his trip to the region but put it off due to elections there. Instead, he met late Sunday in Amman with Pakistani army chief for Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, officials said.

The pair had a private dinner at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Jordan as Pakistan continued to seethe in the aftermath of the return from exile to the country of former president Pervez Musharraf, himself a former army chief.

Earlier Monday, the U.S. military ceded control of the Parwan last detention facility near the U.S.-run Bagram military base north of Kabul, a year after the two sides initially agreed on the transfer. Karzai demanded control of Parwan as a matter of national sovereignty.

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Joseph Dunford, handed over Parwan at a ceremony there after signing an agreement with Afghan Defense Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi. "This ceremony highlights an increasingly confident, capable and sovereign Afghanistan," Dunford said.

The dispute over the center threw a pall over the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014.

An initial agreement to hand over Parwan was signed a year ago, but efforts to follow through on it constantly stumbled over American concerns that the Afghan government would release prisoners that it considered dangerous.

They have reason to worry. Zakir Qayyum ? a former Guantanamo detainee, was released into Afghan custody in 2007. He was freed four months later and rejoined the Taliban. He has reportedly risen to become the No. 2 in the Taliban.

A key hurdle was a ruling by an Afghan judicial panel holding that administrative detention, the practice of holding someone without formal charges, violated the country's laws. The U.S. argued that international law allowed administrative detentions and also argued that it could not risk the passage of some high-value detainees to the notoriously corrupt Afghan court system.

An initial deadline for the full handover passed last September and another earlier this month.

The detention center houses about 3,000 prisoners and the majority are already under Afghan control. The United States had not handed over about 100, and some of those under American authority do not have the right to a trial because the U.S. considers them part of an ongoing conflict.

There are also about three dozen non-Afghan detainees, including Pakistanis and other nationals that will remain in American hands. The exact number and nationality of those detainees has never been made public.

A new agreement, or memorandum of understanding, was signed at the ceremony by Dunford and Khan, but the U.S. military said it will not be made public. The agreement supplants one signed last March, which had been made public.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the new agreement "affirms their mutual commitment to the lawful and humane treatment of detainees and their intention to protect the people of Afghanistan and coalition forces," an apparent reference to the release of detainees deemed to be dangerous.

There are about 100,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan, including about 66,000 from the United States. American officials have made no final decision on how many troops might remain in Afghanistan after 2014, although they have said as many as many as 12,000 U.S. and coalition forces could remain.

The U.S. started to hold detainees at Bagram Air Field in early 2002. For several years, prisoners were kept at a former Soviet aircraft machine plant converted into a lockup.

In 2009, the U.S. opened a new detention facility next door. The number of detainees incarcerated at that prison, renamed the Parwan Detention Facility, went from about 1,100 in September 2010 to more than 3,000.

After Monday's handover, it was renamed the Afghan National Detention Facility at Parwan and the U.S. military said it would provide the Afghan army with advisers and $39 million in funding.

The United States has spent about a quarter of a billion dollars to build the Bagram facility along with Kabul's main prison located in the capital.

God of War: Ascension Act One, Impressions & Thoughts | Video ...

Bigger and badder must have been the concept that SCE developer, Santa Monica Studio was going for when making God of War: Ascension. The combat and visual elements certainly deliver in that front. The moments where Kratos fights monsters larger than him increased and the ease to defeat them is not the same as in the classic trilogy. By simplifying some game play elements, a nuance has been lost. Even the same ol? deliverables that gamers are acquainted with are not as spectacular.

This game is worth playing more for learning the fate of Kratos breaking his oath to Ares than actual gameplay. The story takes a step back in time to when this Spartan was working for the original God of War, and he broke his oath to him because he was tricked to killing his wife and child. As a result, the Furies interceded and stole him away to a faraway pace for imprisonment and torment. Even the choice of including these mythical figures is worth noting. The Erinyes, as they are originally called, are purveyors of justice. Some could say they are winged avengers. Normally, they serve Hades and Persephone, but in this game they are independent divine enforcers of a higher order. Although the Greek world is small, to see how all these figures relate in the God of War universe is amusing.

In the original trilogy, Kratos will kill Zeus and his godfather, Kronos. For this new game to have the Furies torture Kratos for his patricide, although it has not been committed yet chronoligically, is forebodingly fitting. These creatures were born from the blood of Ouranos (Uranus, the god of the sky), when he was castrated by his son Kronos; this act is motivation enough for why the Erinyes exist.?The?storyline the developers created is certainly worthy of a great Greek tragedy.

Of course, Kratos escapes his otherworldly prison, and where he goes is most likely back to Earth, the prime material world, in order to recover his memories. End Act One.

The only thing new in this prequel package is the online multiplayer mode. Here, battles nearly worthy of the attempt to storm Troy can be tried out, like Team Favor of the Gods, Favor of the Gods, Trial of the Gods, and Capture the Flag. The final option is nothing new. As more gamers flock to trying this option out in Mordor-worthy proportions, more about this online feature will be evaluated.

And should that happen, some gamers may require a larger screen to play these sub-games. A problem the God of War series have been gently plagued with is with its camera positioning. Ascension is no different. When the camera goes wide, trying to identify where Kratos is on a 42? screen is difficult. The bloody glowing blur of his chains is the only telltale identifier. And gamers may well opt for area affect attacks when gameplay shifts to this perspective. Investing in a 90? screen is not possible and a city treasury will have to be sacked to afford having an IMAX screen to play this game on. Alternatively, a PS3 can be plugged to a projector.

Even the setup of how many save points to be found can help gamers go back to search areas missed. In the early act, some paths are linear. Hunting for phoenix feathers and gorgon eggs (to improve health and magic meters) can easily be missed in a game that relies on constant movement than wandering around. In the early part of the game that features puzzles, none of them are all that sophisticated. God of War III was one game that had more troublesome moments than others.

Because this series works in a linear path, figuring out a solution is not too difficult. The challenge is more with how to take out as many opponents in one blow than to swallow red orbs to fill the rage meter, to enhance Krato?s damage dealing and absorbing ability. Now if only this game delved into including some role-playing aspects then maybe players can determine the final fate of Kratos on their own than with a fixed destiny. That would mean alternative pieces of dialogue and cut-scenes that would infuse this world with a more dramatic element. Having more characters for Kratos to interact with can add to the tale more. While these ideas can change this platform style fighting game to an entirely different product, maybe that?s what the developers need to do to infuse a new life to this franchise.

The PS4 is right around the corner, and to give this series of games a new purpose is required to keep it alive for another console generation.

In rarity, Obama, VP Biden may be out of U.S. at same time next week

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For security reasons, the U.S. president and vice president rarely venture abroad at the same time. But events next week may compel both Barack Obama and Joe Biden to be out of the country on the same day, at least for a matter of hours.

President Obama leaves on Tuesday night on a trip to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Earlier on Tuesday, Vice President Biden will be attending ceremonies in Rome surrounding the installation of new Pope Francis.

What is uncertain is whether Biden will be back in the United States by the time Obama departs on his trip. His official schedule has not been released.

Ben Rhodes, the White House deputy national security adviser, said he did not know for certain whether both Obama and Biden would be out of the country at the same time.

"We do take those considerations into account and do prudent planning to ensure that we are prepared for any contingencies and we often seek to coordinate their travel for that purpose," Rhodes told reporters.

George Washington University Assistant Biology Professor Alex Pyron uses DNA sequencing to learn the history of native snakes

WASHINGTON Alex Pyron's expertise is in family trees. Who is related to whom, who begat whom, how did they get where they are now. But not for humans: reptiles.

In 2011, his fieldwork in Sri Lanka studying snake diversity on the island led him to confirm the identity of 60 known species of snakes. With Sri Lankan collaborators, Ruchira Somaweera, an author on snakes and expert on amphibians and reptiles, and Dushantha Kandambi, a local naturalist and snake expert, the team collected 60 species of snakes and of those, Dr. Pyron used DNA sequencing technology on 40 of them. The study led to a greater understanding of how all the snakes are related to each other and their evolutionary relationship other species globally.

"We found that Sri Lanka has been colonized by snakes at least five times by totally different snake groups, which have each diversified heavily within the island," said Dr. Pyron, the Robert Griggs Assistant Professor of Biology at George Washington University in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Pyron's findings were recently featured in the March edition of the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution.

One finding was a blindsnake, which on its own would be noteworthy but in this case, the blindsnake had a history on the island.

"Molecular data, or DNA, has revolutionized all fields, whether finding genes for cancer or detecting new species. In my field, uses of DNA are twofold: to discover if populations are really new species and two, to determine how species are related. We were able to do both of these things in Sri Lanka. We discovered the blindsnake and we suspected it was a new species, but when we sequenced it, we discovered that it was an entirely new lineage of blindsnake. It's still a blindsnake, but a new genus, a group of blindsnakes that had never been discovered or described.

Using datasets that included equal number of genes from endemic, or native snakes, and those that have colonized their fellow snake community, he and his team were able to determine how the 40 sequenced snakes were related to each other, a discovery that also revealed the deep biodiversity present on in Sri Lanka.

"We use complex chemical reactions to fragment the cell and the genome, and collect the purified DNA. It then gets passed through an even more complex series of reactions that allow us to determine the sequence of a large fraction of the genome," he said. Dr. Pyron was recently awarded almost $16,000 by the National Geographic Society to do a similar study of lizards, also in Sri Lanka.

His research reveals that for all that is known, there is still so much that is unknown about reptiles.

"Sri Lanka has one of the oldest recorded civilizations on the planet, and the blindsnake was discovered in the yard of an environmental agency office. Species are still being discovered there, and even the ones that were known were not really 'known,' as the DNA data are telling us new stories about how they are related, completely contradicting what we thought we knew. It tells us that Sri Lanka is a much bigger hotspot for biodiversity than previously known, and harbors massive richness.

"Hopefully, working with my Sri Lankan colleagues will be at least part of the key to understanding how a relatively small island like Sri Lanka has generated and maintained this diversity, which would get at some of the fundamental questions in evolutionary biology regarding species diversity."

Teacher's passion for art leads her into great journeys | Condor Voice

By Tiara Ousley

Dawn Pavloski has always been fascinated with art since her childhood. Pavloski?s love for art caused her to seek much education and it was in college where she surprised herself and became a teacher. Equipped with knowledge and talent, Pavloski?s passion for art lead her to unintentionally make Curie history and she still has many more adventures.

Pavloski looked back on childhood days when her aunt would babysit her. ?The minute I walked in she had pen and paper,? Pavloski said. It was this exposure to art that kept Pavloski thriving in visual arts in high school.

During Pavloski?s high school years, Pavloski?s art teacher her art and noticed that she had a ?natural talent for art? and helped her craft her talent. Pavloski joined and soon, became the president of the art club.

Despite the struggles and high competition that goes with the visual arts industry, Pavloski?s art teacher and even her parents encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

This lead Pavloski to become the first in her family to attend college. She attended American Academy, Art institute of Chicago, and Columbia College and majored in many forms of art such as film,? animation, and illustration.

Over the years she worked for animation companies such as Bix Pix Entertainment, Lala Bash Entertainment and currently freelances and does children book illustrations for Wilkinson?s Studio, Inc.

Although, Pavloski may have a passion for art, she discovered another passion later in life.

Pavloski said, ?I had no passion to be a teacher to start with and it wasn?t till down the road, till I wanted to share my knowledge.? Pavloski then attended and received her Masters at Dominican University and became an art teacher at Curie in 2007.

It is here at Curie, where she impresses her colleagues, grasps students? attention, brings a completely different media into the art department, and makes a difference in shaping people?s perspective on the importance and impact that art has on society.

Richards, an art teacher said, ?She?s one of the most talented people I?ve ever met in my life. I would love to be able to illustrate like that, like she does off the top of her head.?

Rebecca Pavesich, Department Chair of Visual Arts and art teacher said, ?Her creativity is overwhelming?she has an extremely positive personality, she connects with the students?she has a great report with her students and her colleagues.?

During Pavloski?s time at Curie, she has done much. In 2011, Pavloski applied for and won the Oppenheimer grant through the Oppenheimer Family Foundation, which is a foundation that gives grants to CPS teachers to enhance teachers? and students? learning experiences, according to their website.

Pavesich said, ?This was an adventure or project that she came up with?wrote the grant, received the money? her students worked on it furiously and now we have beautiful benches [in the courtyard] that came from out of that grant money.?

During the 2011-2012 year, theater tech was no longer offered as a major and some students were disappointed.

However, new art classes were offered to the entire student body. Pavloski created Curie?s first Film & Animation class. Richards said, ?The opportunity came along, she wrote out a proposal to the board of education and they approved it.?

Pavloski spent most of her summer putting together her curriculum for the Film & Animation class.? ?There?s not really a lot of high school level classes taught in film and animation. Putting the curriculum together was challenging because there?s so much and its packed into the one class of film and animation,? Pavloski said.

Some things that Pavloski teaches in her new class is? how people in the filmmaking industry, from Screenwriters to Costume Designers are able to make a great living from art, the history and impact the arts has had on society. Pavloski? has even had Visual Arts college representatives come to her classes and speak to students about art careers they could pursue. She encourages students to pursue a career in art or to attend technical school.

Although Pavloski experienced many challenges putting together the class was worth it.

?It wasn?t work when you have something that you enjoy doing and that?s important, to find what you like doing,? Pavloski said.

Richards said, ?Whoever takes that class is really lucky to have her as a teacher because she?s covering that class unbelievably well.?

Kevin Amor (Div. 509), didn?t sign up for the Film & Animation class, however he has been enjoying it. Armor said,?It?s different from all the art classes. It?s one of those classes not every school has. It?s going to get more interesting.?

Pavesich said, ?she had enough students to fill eight classes, so only half the kids?actually got in.?

Pavesich said, ?I hear students in my class talking about films they saw, what they think, and how the film might have been different if there were a different ending. And just to have that dialogue to carry on to another class, she is really making an impact on the students she teaches.?

Although, Pavloski loves teaching, she would love to have more time to work on her personal projects at home. Pavloski?s passion for art, ? knowledge, motivation, and accomplishments may leave many to wonder what? is next in line for her.

Pavloski said, ?I would love to have my own animation studio. I would like to have a studio where students, from technical colleges? would submit their own work, as well it would be a great mentoring program.?

Time for Another Fiscal Fight

The budget season is upon us. This week, Democrats and Republicans in Congress will offer their spending plans ahead of the president, who usually goes first (the White House says it was delayed by the fiscal-cliff mess.).

No doubt the two budgets will offer different worldviews when it comes to the Pentagon, domestic discretionary spending, and, of course, entitlements.

Democrats are already salivating; their Senate campaign committee held a conference call Monday to chirp that they were planning to lambaste any Republican who supported a Paul Ryan-type program for Medicare. That surely worked during the 2012 race but whether it?s a winner in 2014?the traditionally gloomy sixth year of a two term presidency?is less certain.

What is sure is that even as the sequester remains unresolved and agencies are publicizing their most painful cuts?Yellowstone hours trimmed! Carrier deployments delayed!?the next budget fight will be underway in hours.

In Washington, why finish one fight before you start the next?

DSCC NOT ALL-IN ON JUDD? The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is not yet committing itself to an Ashley Judd candidacy, Politico reports. NATO COMMANDER: CLAIM OF U.S.-TALIBAN COLLUSION FALSE. The commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan is denying as ?categorically false? an accusation by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the U.S. is holding daily talks with the Taliban and that the militant group wants the U.S. to remain in the country. ?All I can do is speak for the coalition to tell you that it's categorically false, and that we have no reason to be colluding with the Taliban," Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford said. Karzai?s comments came Sunday, just hours ahead of a meeting with newly installed Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, who said he tried to offer assurances that no such back-channel talks were happening. At the same time, an insider attack in Afghanistan Monday has left two U.S. troops and two Afghan police officers dead. Read more

SENATE STAFFERS SQUABBLE OVER OFFICE SPACE. If Congress does not appear to care much for mitigating the effects of the sequester or addressing other national threats, it may be because they?re focused on office space. Roll Call reports that the offices of Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Dean Heller, R-Nev., are feuding over allegations that Heller is blocking the more-senior Chambliss from examining his office suite. In the Senate, senior members have the option of booting junior members out of their offices and moving in. At least one other Senate office says Heller?s people have obstructed efforts to tour his office, though a spokesperson for Sen. Travel & Leisure Blog's: Up Close to Cape Horn

Years ago on a documentary, Michael Palin landed on Cape Horn in Chile. This small island is the southernmost tip of realistic liveable land on planet earth. All that lies south is the ice cold continent of Antarctica. I was off to Cape Horn![]

It's owned by Chile, not Argentina and forms the southern point of the island area known as Tierra Del Fuego. I love the name actually - CAPE HORN. It has a certain inspired ring to it. I was hell bent on seeing it for real, and selfishly I wanted to step foot on it.

it's expensive to visit the Cape of Horn. For some reason Michael Palin didn't pay for it - it would all have been covered by a generous BBC budget for the purpose of filming. My trip was on a much lower budget and I managed to backpack my way to Antarctica - the trip to visit the Horn, even just to see it on the way back was such a bonus. However the Chilean marine authorities don't let ships close to it - they issue a proximity maximum of around 12 - 13 miles except in special circumstances.

The boat we were sailing on was a mighty fine vessel. Having been made in Denmark and registered in Liberia it was now making regular journeys from Antarctica to Argentina! We didn't catch a glimspe of Cape Horn at all on our departure from Argentina and in fact we headed into the dreaded Drake Passage late at night so even passing by the area close most of the passengers on board would have been asleep. Plus we didn't actually go near Cape Horn on the way down, as it's further west. []

There were rumours circulating on board the ship that we would be calling at Cape Horn on the way back up to Argentina. This all began by the crew showing us an intriguing documentary about Cape Horn as we headed back onto the Drake Passage, however nothing was confirmed.

But it became obvious that the plan was to change direction so we could catch a glimpse of the horn. I noticed that we were making fast progress (there was a live map on board the boat near the reception, where we could all see where we had been and where we were going) and in fact had suddenly changed direction to head north west rather than directly north, following our departure from Elephant Island.

On the evening of our final ascent up the Drake Passage the visit to view Cape Horn was finally confirmed by the crew amid a joyous response. We were told at the recap of the day and the briefing session that we would indeed be sailing close to Cape Horn for a view at 5am the next morning.

The night before proved to be quite a late one in the onboard Polar Bear Bar, it was our final journey on the treacherous Drake Passage and we had all bonded as a group on board the ship and on land on the magical continent. I left the bar around 2.30 am, with many still up. Sunset had passed us by on the west and sunrise had begun in the east, giving the boat the odd position of one side in darkness and the other side in early morning light.

It was only 2 hours in bed and then up again so that we could actually see Cape Horn. It was a massive crowd gathered on deck for the viewing as we inched closer to the horn itself. It must have been 6.30 when we finally caught sight of it.

The announcement from the bridge confirmed that the island tip ahead was indeed Cape Horn and that we had been given permission due to the favourable weather to breach the 12 - 13 mile barrier and get a bit closer to Cape Horn.

Once we were that close to Cape Horn everyone was busy staring out at it and taking photos. We got within 3 miles of it in the end and it was a magnificent moment. None of us landed on Cape Horn but we saw it with our own eyes!

Android Malware, believe the hype.

?or ?Just how much Android malware is there anyway??

Mobile malware can no longer be ignored

The security industry has an embarrassing problem. For several years it became a matter of course for the big names in security to warn annually that ?next year? was to be the year of mobile malware. ?Look out?, we said, ?mobile malware, it?s coming??; but it never did. It remained elusively over the threat horizon. In reality, every year since Cabir in 2004 we have saw appearances and developments in mobile malware (originally for Symbian, J2ME and Windows CE) but it simply never reached critical mass or moved beyond the mischievous.

Now that the problem is well and truly here (the last two years have both been called ?the year of mobile malware? at several points) we have a problem persuading the world at large that we are not crying ?Wolf!? yet again. There is a distinct scepticism paired with a strong belief that the security industry may be selling a solution to a problem that doesn?t exist, or if it does then it only exists in far off countries and little used app stores. So, in the interest of clarity, here are a few numbers that hopefully will go some way towards putting that scepticism to bed, once and for all.

Trend Micro?s Mobile App Reputation Services [PDF]?proactively sources and analyses Android apps from around the world. We give them reputation scores in three discrete areas; Maliciousness, Resource Utilisation and Privacy. Here are the numbers, hot of the presses this 8th March 2013, bear in mind these numbers change every minute, upwards?

We have thus far analysed more than 2 million apps, a not inconsiderable sample size when you consider that the entire Google Play offering is around 700,000 apps, and here?s the brutal truth.

  • 293,091 Apps classified as outright malicious and a further 150,203 classified as high risk. It took Microsoft Windows 14 years to attract this volume of malicious code!
  • Of those 293,091 malicious apps, 68,740 were sourced directly from Google Play. It?s not just Chinese and Russian app stores.
  • 22% of apps were found to inappropriately leak user data, over the network, SMS or telephone.?The leaked data most often includes IMEI, ICCID, Contact data and telephone number. A few apps were even found to leak data using the microphone and camera (along with several other kinds of private data).
  • In addition, 32% of apps were classified as ?Poor? in terms of battery usage, 24% ?Poor? for network usage and 28% for memory usage.

It?s no surprise that BlackBerry have opted to integrate our Mobile App Reputation Service in their Blackberry World, stopping those malicious apps from ever reaching their customers. It would be heartening to see more app stores taking the safety of their customers so seriously.

Netanyahu: Iran using nuclear talks to 'buy time' for bomb

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Renewed international efforts to negotiate curbs on Iran's disputed nuclear program have backfired by giving it more time to work on building a bomb, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

His remarks on the inconclusive February 26-27 meeting between Iran and six world powers signaled impatience by Israel, which has threatened to launch preemptive war on its arch-foe, possibly in the coming months, if it deems diplomacy a dead end.

Senior U.S. diplomat Wendy Sherman flew in to brief Israel about the Kazakh-hosted talks, in which Tehran, which denies seeking nuclear arms, was offered modest relief from sanctions in return for halting mid-level uranium enrichment.

There was no breakthrough. The sides will reconvene in Almaty on April 5-6 after holding technical talks in Istanbul.

"My impression from these talks is that the only thing that is gained from them is a buying of time, and through this time-buying Iran intends to continue enriching nuclear material for an atomic bomb and is indeed getting closer to this goal," Netanyahu told his Cabinet in remarks aired by Israeli media.

Extrapolating from U.N. reports on Iran's enrichment of uranium to 20 percent fissile purity, a short technical step from weapons-grade, Netanyahu has set a mid-2013 "red line" for denying the Islamic republic the fuel needed for a first bomb.

Iranian media reported on Sunday the country was building around 3,000 new advanced enrichment centrifuges, a development that could accelerate the nuclear project.

The prospect of unilateral Israeli strikes, and the likely wide-ranging reprisals by Iran and its regional allies, worries Washington, which wants to pursue diplomacy as it winds down costly military commitments abroad.

OBAMA VISIT LOOMS

In an attempt to make their proposals more palatable to Tehran, the United States and five other world powers appeared to have softened previous demands in Almaty - for example regarding their requirement that the Iranians ship out their stockpile of the higher-grade uranium.

A senior Israeli official said that while the Netanyahu government had hoped for a tougher line by the so-called P5+1, it was resigned to awaiting the results of this round of talks.

"At the end of the day, what matters is that the Iranians end their enrichment, whether it's through shutting down their facilities or through more nuanced technical safeguards," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

The official would not comment on how or if the latest diplomacy had affected the readiness of Israel, which is widely assumed to have the region's only nuclear arsenal, to go to war.

Iran may have warded off that threat by turning some of its 20 percent-pure uranium into fuel rods for a research reactor.

The international standoff and shifting timelines are expected to dominate U.S. President Barack Obama's trip to Israel later this month. The Israelis urge a tougher posture on Iran from their ally, which has a hefty military presence in the Gulf and says it is poised to use force as a last resort.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, in a speech in Washington to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, echoed Netanyahu in voicing doubt that diplomacy would stop Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"Therefore, all options must remain on the table," he told the pro-Israel lobby group. "We expect all those who say it to mean it. We mean it."

Israel's dovish president, Shimon Peres, sounded more upbeat after meeting Sherman last Thursday. Peres said he had "total faith in the Obama administration, in its commitment and its actions in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons".

Obama's Israel visit has been overshadowed by local politics too, given the rightist Netanyahu's failure so far to build a new coalition government after he narrowly won a January 22 ballot.

Appealing to potential party allies to rally to him in the name of national security, Netanyahu told his cabinet: "To my regret this is not happening, and in the coming days I will continue my efforts to unify and galvanize forces ahead of the major national and international challenges that we face."

An important predictor of the severity of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants may be what their mothers ate during pregnancy, according to a Vanderbilt study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

RSV is the most common cause of severe lower respiratory tract disease among infants and young children worldwide. Currently there is no effective vaccine against RSV. Outbreaks occur in communities each year, usually lasting 4-5 months during the fall, winter and/or spring months.

Lead author Fernando Polack, M.D., Cesar Milstein Professor of Pediatrics, said his study found that the most serious cases of RSV correlate with mothers who ate a diet high in carbohydrates during pregnancy.

"These cases were not just severe, but the sickest of sick," Polack said. "What we found was the presumptive impact of a carbohydrate-rich diet was clearly dose dependent."

More than 1,200 infants younger than 2 years old were hospitalized in 12 institutions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the 2011 RSV season.

Of those patients, nearly 800 were found to have RSV infection, and 106 of those babies were considered to have a life-threatening form of the disease, with oxygen saturation rates below 87 percent: Twenty-two infants died in the hospital, and an additional 26 infants died at home with evidence suggesting they died from RSV.

Polack and his collaborators had the mothers fill out a nutrition survey during their final trimester of pregnancy in order to examine the impact of maternal diets heavy in fruits and vegetables versus protein, fats or carbohydrate-rich diets.

Overall, the frequency of life-threatening or fatal RSV in infants was about 12.7 percent among participants, but that rate jumped to 55.6 percent for babies whose mothers ate the greatest proportion of carbohydrates.

"Our study suggests that, where RSV and other respiratory viruses are concerned, the more sugars a mother eats the worse the situation may get for the baby in the first part of life," said Polack, adding that the next step will be to confirm the association in future studies.

###

Polack's work is part of a large study conducted on RSV in developing countries, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
