United Way in Waukesha County hosted the launch of Waukesha County?s Born Learning Trail at Cutler Park in Waukesha.?
On Thursday, Sept. 20, Cutler Park playground was buzzing with activity which included the launch of one of the newest Born Learning Trails in Waukesha County (the 5th). ? With visitors from the library, community parents and a local daycare joining in to learn about the newest amenity to the park, the Trail was a big hit.
The noon ribbon cutting was also joined by Mayor Scrima and County Executive Vrakas.
Born Learning is a United Way initiative that recognizes children learn from the moment they are born. Parents, guardians, educators and others who care for young children understand that the early years are important, but many are looking to encourage early learning prior to school.
Born Learning Trails provides parents, grandparents, caregivers and the community with specific, ?do-able? activities that are fun and easy which promotes early learning for young children. ?Visitors received a tour of the trail by Barb Holtz from Prevention & Protection of Abused Children, who champions the Born Learning Initiative in Waukesha County. ?This series of learning activities is now at Cutler Park, which is strategically placed next to the Waukesha Public Library. ?
Jayne Thoma, Executive Director of United Way in Waukesha County as the church bells rang noon, expressed sincere appreciation of the great community support from major trail sponsor, Waukesha Family Practice Center. ?Thoma also recognized the additional assistance of ProHealth Care and Medical College of Wisconsin. ??
Mayor Scrima attributed the Born Learning Trails as one of the contributing factors for the City of Waukesha being recently recognized ?by the America?s Promise Alliance ?as being one of the top 100 best places to live for young people. ??
Dave Jeske-Volunteer Coordinator , City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry presented Chris Purdy from Waukesha Family Practice Center and Lori Hayes of United Way in Waukesha County a certificate of appreciation for the commitment to our parks.?
Also speaking was Dr. Michael Mazzone and Chris Purdy from Waukesha Family Practice Center and Jean Schultz from ProHealth Care who shared their appreciation of the volunteers who installed the trail and the importance of giving back to the community. ?Dr. Mazzone stated, ?having fun promotes people?s health. Part of that fun is serving the community?. ?The installation of the Born Learning Trail accomplished both.
Chris Purdy added, with leadership from Dr. Mazzone, they starting the community project event seven years ago to help promote team work. Volunteer activities allow the team to come together outside of work which helps make the practice so successful while giving back to the community. ?The staff looks forward to the activity each year. ?Mazzone, Purdy and Schultz all addressed that this rewarding experience may need to be repeated in 2013. ??
United Way in Waukesha County is coordinating six trails before the snow flies this year with plans for more in 2013. ?
