Research into Quality in online education (Intro) ? Cathy Anderson

I have been doing a review of 30 articles, which I requested, from Proquest via a search for quality in online education.? No one can dispute the growth in online education, but the debate still exists as to what defines quality in online education.

?

One may argue that if a course or program retains students then that is evidence enough of a quality program or course, however I would argue that there is much to it than that. ??The research has consistently demonstrated, since Chickering and Gamson presented their Seven Principles For Good Practice in Undergraduate Education, in 1987 and No Significant Difference by Thomas Russell.

?

Of course, Chickering and Gamson?s piece was written in 1987, before the advent of online education, but those tenets hold true today as much as they did then and they have been applied to quality evaluations of online education, they are:

?

  1. Encourages contact between students and faculty
  2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students.
  3. Encourages active learning.
  4. Gives prompt feedback.
  5. Emphasizes time on task.
  6. Communicates high expectations.
  7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.

Using these as an evaluation of the quality of an online program as course are the first steps in creating a positive learning environment for students and to ensure student success.? However these are the foundation for identifying strategies for quality in the online learning environment, based upon? a review of the research there are many factors to be considered in the design of an online course, the readiness of students for learning in the online environment, and the preparedness of faculty to teach in an online environment.

There are many changes in education, online learning is becoming prevalent, no longer an option of convenience it is setting that course for deeper understanding for how student can learn. ?As we learn more about how students learn, not online in the virtual environment we also learn better ways to design and deliver content no matter what the environment, whether that is physical, virtual, or a hybrid.? I think the concept of ?flipped classrooms,? is an example of this.

?

This is a shorter than usual post, I am reviewing the articles for reference to consistent practices that they define as a demonstration of quality in online courses. What has changed, if anything, since Chickering and Gamson?? In truth, the 7 Principles for Good Practice are timeless, and they will probably always provide the foundation for quality in education programs and courses.? They also identified the social element of education, which includes interaction and discussion.

Preliminary review of the articles also indicates that success in online is, in part, the responsibility of the learner. How motivated is he/she?? What is their level of preparedness for college level work and for the technology?? What are the soft skill levels of the student?? How can they manage their time and organization?
